Sleep, watch TV, finish reading some books, read my pile of magazines, then back to writing for me! :)

- Seth Croston Barber

Idea for next year's NaNoWriMo: write about your experience in NaNoWriMo. Better yet, blog in book form!

- JD

I wouldn't say luck is involved at all. It's pure diligence. Keep it up as long as it doesn't cause trouble with other important aspects of your life.

- Keith

Re: Characters...

I too have struggled with this in my very very few writing attempts. However, when you said "spill his thoughts upon the page in a sort of dialog with himself" it reminded me of Tolkein's works. There are a few times when ghollam does the same, and it really adds to the story, and in my opinion, is the only way to get some important story elements brought out.

Just my $0.02

Also, I laughed at this sentance...
I could try to catch it as I write (get the joke?)

- JD

Thanks. I think I will have a half-elf at least (which means there are elves somewhere) and I would probably have to have a dwarf make at least a cameo appearance. I’m also thinking about kobolds, and gnomes, but then . . . well I don’t know. ;)

Thanks for the advice though. It helps.

- Seth Croston Barber

Though various “staple” races do appear in fantasy fiction, its very rare that one author’s version of an Elf (for example) is the same as another author’s. part of this may be the desire to openly copy some one else, but another reason may be that reader’s actually like to discover little differences.

One thing that makes for a good fantasy story, in my estimation, is when seemingly “staple” elements have twists. I think shaping a new world (even if only slightly so) is part of the appeal of fantasy fiction.

So I would say, start with “staple” races, and then chalk up differences to your own creative license.

- daglo
